Preparing your Grow Project for Winter

After a very mild start to autumn, winter will soon be upon us and with winter comes some new challenges for the indoor grower! This month we are taking a look at some elements of your grow project which could provide a challenge over the coming months!

Make the most of your heat

Heat costs money and with energy prices staying high this winter it is important to make the most of every drop of heat in your grow project. With the increase in light and heat being used, make sure none of it is wasted. Any excess temperature can be spread around your home making sure you get the most out of your heating system.

Don’t let humidity drop

Central heating is the arch nemesis of humidity so winter is a really tricky time for indoor growers. Heating systems can easily drop the humidity in your grow room and this will have a negative effect on your crop and yield. Humidifiers are a great option to overcome this issue, however, make sure you are keeping an eye on the humidity levels as too much can provide an ideal environment for mould or fungi to thrive.

Watch the temperatures

Temperatures within a grow set up can range from pot to roof so it’s really important to ensure your heat distribution is correct for your plants. Keep post off cold hard surfaces such as concrete to limit the transfer of cold to the root systems of your plants. Ideally, the roots want to be kept somewhere between 20 and 21 degrees centigrade to ensure optimum growth.

Containing your light and heat

During colder months you will naturally be using more light and heat to maintain your indoor grow project. Ensuring you keep as much as possible in your grow area is key to getting the most out of your energy invested. Using reflective sheeting is a great way to ensure you are making the most of your light and heat along with being as energy efficient as possible. Many types of reflective sheeting is now multi-layered to ensure maximum insulation.

Ensure good air circulation

Heat wont stand still so as soon as you get warm air into your grow space it will need to be moved to ensure the temperature is kept as consistent as possible from floor to roof. Ensuring your fan systems are correctly set up to provide good air circulation will ensure you are moving the heat around your project to get the correct temperatures from root to tip.
